Umm Nidal - The Mother of Martyrs - The Ultimate Islamic "Hockey Mom"

Maryam Mohammad Yousif Farhat, more commonly known as Umm Nidal. The mother of Martyrs, losing three of her six sons in Hamas suicide attacks against Israel. She proclaimed upon their deaths that their sacrifice for the cause made her happy. Nidal in Arabic means to struggle, to give effort and to work.

The first son to die was 17 year old Muhammad Farhat in 2002. He entered the Gaza Strip and opened fire on Israeli students, throwing grenades at them while they studied. Five students died while 23 others were wounded. He was instantly shot to death. Maryam, delighted by her sons actions, proclaimed "Allahu Akbar!" which is an Islamic phrase meaning, God is Greatest and passed out chocolates, to celebrate his death.

Then, it was her eldest son's turn, Nidel, in 2003. He was killed by a bomb planted by Israeli Intelligence. She was so happy.

Finally, a third son, Rawad, died in 2005 while driving his truck. It was struck by an Israeli airstike. He was carrying a Qassam rocket. Again, she couldn't have been more pleased.

In an interview in 2005, Umm Nidal stated:

"I protect my sons from defying Allah, or from choosing a path that would not please Allah, this makes me happy. She is honoured with their deaths."

She argues that since her sons were in the army and considered soldiers, they had a right to fight by any legitimate means possible and all means are legitimate. It is within the Islamic religious laws. Peace means the liberation of Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.

She died age 64, on March 17, 2013 in Gaza. Surprisingly, her funeral was a calling card, attended by 4000 Palestinian mourners and the Hamas leader himself, Ismail Haniyeh.

Ironically, she has been compared in America and Canada with our very own, scourge on society, the "Hockey moms."

Then, that's another blog.
