Do ethnic minorities experience economic and non-economic disadvantages in the labour market as compared with non-ethnic minority groups when applying for employment?
Does "ethnic penalty" apply to immigrants coming into British Columbia, during the job search, the hiring and promotion process. We've all heard the employment statistics of black people as compared to white people in America, but what if you are Muslim or a Buddist, does "ethnic penalty" still apply, say here in Surrey?
Would someone from Chinese descent, have as many difficulties as someone from Nigeria? Would someone from Bombay, have more "ethnic penalty" moving into my town, compared to say someone from the Australian outback, an aboriginal?
"Ethnic penalty" cannot be described simply as discrimination, other factors must be considered, like sex, age, generation; first or second-born, here or over-seas, and their personal aspirations and preferences, the condition of the person's social network when arriving, his skills and education, the social trust of the community the immigrant moves into, and the employers themselves. Would a busy Mandarin Chinese restaurant be the best place for an East Indian who cannot speak Mandarin, be hired to prep food?
The "Ethnic penalty" results in lower incomes for the immigrants, higher unemployment, and the failure to convert their high educational attainments into comparable occupational outcomes, (finding no work for their hard earned skills in basketry).
I would have to say yes, there is an "Ethnic Penalty" for immigrants. People are just plain prejudice and do discriminate, the same as if I were emigrating to another country. It's something I'd put into the equation before making the decision to immigrate.
